The Johnson Family came originally from Monkwearmouth in Sunderland, Co. Durham. The direct ancestry has been traced back to Joseph Johnson who was born in Sunderland circa 1806, and with his wife Jane Davison, produced 7 children. His son John, who married Sarah Lawther in 1857, moved to Gloucester in the 1860s and in turn his son, William Herbert Johnson, moved on to Oxford with his wife, Winifred, at the turn of the 20th Century.
